CITY OF TARTU
Tartu 2024 bidding process was initiated by Tartu City Council. Tartu 2024 Candidacy Team worked as a sub-institution of the Department of Culture of Tartu City Government from 2017-2019. The Tartu 2024 Foundation (Sihtasutus Tartu 2024 or SA Tartu 2024 in Estonian) was established by a decision of the Tartu City Council in December 2019.
REPUBLIC OF ESTONIA
The competition to select and designate the European Capital of Culture from Estonia was carried out by the Ministry of Culture together with the Association of Estonian Cities and Municipalities.
19 SOUTHERN ESTONIAN MUNICIPALITIES
In 2019, municipality leaders from Southern Estonian counties of Põlva, Tartu, Valga and Võru, the City of VIljandi and the City of Tartu signed an agreement of cooperation supporting Tartu's candidacy. The Tartu 2024 Foundation (Sihtasutus Tartu 2024 or SA Tartu 2024 in Estonian) that was established after awarding the title is tasked with coordinating and developing continuous European Capital of Culture cooperation.
